Spelling and meaning
Choose the right spelling from meaning with 24 sentence clues, 12 homophone pairs, a partner game and an answer key for teachers.
Homophones sound alike but have different meanings and, in these examples, different spellings. In “The boat crossed the calm ___,” the answer is sea, not see. A spoken answer alone cannot show which spelling a student means: ask them to write it or spell it aloud.
The 12 pairs below provide 24 original sentence clues. Choose four pairs for one lesson and keep both sentences for each pair. Pronunciation varies across accents; use pairs that sound alike in your classroom and discuss differences without treating an accent as an error.
Keep a simple teacher record: correct spelling, correct reason, or revisit. Do not award a learning point just because someone repeats the word with the right sound. In a cooperative group, focus on explanations instead of speed.
Enter one target spelling as the answer in the manual editor and its sentence as the clue. For flour, use “We mixed ___ into the bread dough.” Put Homophones in the category field. After the board is solved, show the alternative flower and ask why it does not fit this sentence.
The visible letter count can help students choose a spelling. That makes the board a supported practice activity, not an independent test. Collect a written choice before showing the board if you want a more useful check of what students know.
Use the game's regular letter and solve scores. Explanations are teacher-led and are not automatically graded or added to the game score. Keep this answer page off the projector.
Display this deliberately mistaken note: “I can here the band from hear. I will right about it next weak.” Partners repair it, then explain every change. The answer is: “I can hear the band from here. I will write about it next week.”
Ask for evidence: hear is receiving sound; here is a place; write records words; week is time. Then invite a new two-sentence message using one pair. A partner checks meaning and spelling before the teacher reviews it.
For support, show two written options and read the sentence twice. For a challenge, remove the options and ask students to invent a second sentence with the other spelling. Avoid clues such as “It sounds like sea,” which do not distinguish the meanings.
Exit check: “The ___ pushed the boat forward.” Choose sail/sale. “We ___ past the park yesterday.” Choose road/rode. “The signal was ___.” Choose week/weak. Answers: sail, rode, weak. Ask for one reason with each answer.
For a different word-study goal, use the compound-word split-and-explain activity. The broader vocabulary review guide explains how to select terms from your own lesson.
Choose a few answers from this resource, then add each answer, category and clue in the manual game editor. Review the board before hosting. These examples are a preparation sheet; the button opens game creation and does not automatically import the list.
Participants join in a browser with a room code. Choose team or individual play when launching. Free accounts can save up to three games and host up to three participant devices; check current plan limits before inviting a larger group.
Any discussion prompts, lesson timings and extra scoring suggested here are instructions for the host to run. They are not automatic grading features.
