Wordplay
Build a before-and-after word puzzle round with 16 explained answers, host clues, an easy warm-up and a method for writing your own puzzles.
Join two familiar expressions at a shared word. Write that word only once in the combined answer. For example, morning coffee and coffee table become morning coffee table. The answer sounds a little odd because it contains two separate ideas.
This set is for building your own Wheel of Fortune-style wordplay round. Each answer below includes a clue and the two expressions that explain it. Keep this host sheet off the shared screen while players solve the game board.
Difficulty depends on familiarity, not just phrase length. A learner may know every letter of an answer without knowing “box office.” Explain unfamiliar expressions after the solve.
Use a small selection for one round; the whole list is a bank for several sessions. All clues are written for a host to adapt to the group.
Each host key includes suggested difficulty, total letters and word lengths separated by +. Spaces do not count. Easy, Medium and Hard match the manual editor's labels; use a lower difficulty only when your group knows both expressions.
Keep an answer key showing both halves. For a fair first game, avoid private jokes, unfamiliar proper names and puzzles that change the linking word's spelling. Read your clue to someone else before the event if possible.
Prepare one demonstration and three to five playable answers. Set the category to Before and After, and enter the combined phrase as the answer. Let the game's normal letter-guessing flow reveal the phrase; after a solve, ask the group to explain the overlap aloud.
Use the explanation as a discussion check. If you want to award an extra point for naming both halves, announce that house rule beforehand and record it yourself. Do not expect the game to recognize or grade the two expressions separately.
For mixed ages, let teams talk before answering and alternate the spokesperson. Stop after your planned time, even if unused puzzles remain.
Choose a few answers from this resource, then add each answer, category and clue in the manual game editor. Review the board before hosting. These examples are a preparation sheet; the button opens game creation and does not automatically import the list.
Participants join in a browser with a room code. Choose team or individual play when launching. Free accounts can save up to three games and host up to three participant devices; check current plan limits before inviting a larger group.
Any discussion prompts, lesson timings and extra scoring suggested here are instructions for the host to run. They are not automatic grading features.
